John Barnes Myofascial Release Approach

John Barnes Myofascial Release Approach Memphis

John Barnes Myofascial Release is not massage.  It is a stand-alone, manual therapy, practiced by a range of healthcare professionals.

For over 40 years, John Barnes Myofascial Release Approach has helped people live with less physical and/or emotional pain. This groundbreaking bodywork has gained the respect of medical professionals across the globe, making it the ultimate mind-body treatment for pain and dysfunction. John Barnes’ gentle style of Myofascial Release (MFR) never forces the tissues, yet achieves profound results. To achieve authentic healing, you will be treated as a unique individual, rather than by using rigid protocols. Your awareness and participation will help unravel and treat your specific issues.

What is Fascia? It is a three-dimensional web of connective tissue that surrounds and attaches to all internal structures. According to Dr. Tom Findley, Executive Director of the International Fascia Research Congress, " Fascia is unique in the body in that it forms a continuous network of connective tissue that "connects" every otther tissue, organ, and cell type. Fascia is also part of the musculoskeletal system and, as such, participates and responds to mechanical changes in posture and body movement." Healthy fascia is well-hydrated and pliable. Layers of fascia should glide against each other with ease during movement. Trauma, chronic inflammation, disease processes, or surgery can cause fascia to harden, leading to a “straight-jacket” of pressure on the body’s delicate structures. This pressure causes pain, loss of mobility, and a multitude of symptoms. Emotional holding or bracing patterns can cause fascia to solidify and harden as well.

John Barnes MFR works by using sustained, gentle stretching of the  fascia for a minimum of 3-5 minutes. Myofascial Rebounding and Myofascial Unwinding are also hallmarks of the Barnes Approach to MFR.  During each session, these techniques are used to release restrictions (hardness) in the fascial system. When restrictions release, your body begins to heal itself. You can expect pain levels to decrease, your body to be more aligned, and to experience a sense of well-being and lightness.

Myofascial Release is not a “quick fix” and requires your commitment to self-care and a willingness to go deeper into yourself. Lorrie will guide you through this process of transformation with kindness, compassion, and acceptance.

Your Appointment: What to Expect

Please come to your session with clean, dry skin free of any oils or lotion.

Men should bring loose, stretchy shorts to wear during treatment. Women should bring loose, stretchy shorts and may wear their regular bra or sports bra during treatment.

Your first appointment will take approximately 90 minutes. This includes intake, assessment, hands-on treatment, and treatment plan.

Subsequent appointments will include brief assessment, hands-on treatment, and any necessary instruction in self-care.

The number of sessions you need will vary depending on your personal treatment goals, number of conditions, how long the conditions have been present, and your commitment to self-care.

John Barnes Myofascial Release is a global approach to healing.  You may be treated in areas that seem unrelated to your symptoms.  Your therapist will work with you to treat the cause(s) of dysfunction, rather than focusing on the symptoms.
